The red dragon holds a red rose, symbol of the House of Lancaster. The rival House of York, on the contrary, had a white rose as a heraldic symbol. During the English civil wars of the fifteenth century, the opposition of these two families became known as the "Wars of the Roses", that is, the red rose of Lancaster versus the white rose of York.
The conflict was ended by King Henry VII who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, united the red and white rose to create the bicolor Tudor Rose, famous emblem of the Tudor dynasty. The new red and white rose symbolized the restoration of peace and harmony; it is also the earliest known example of how a simple heraldic design became a brilliant propaganda tool.
