Description
This hand painted design has been created exclusively for MedievalMade and is inspired to the Garden of Ninfa, an exceptional site in the southeast of Rome that has been defined as "the most romantic garden in the world". Ninfa owes its name to nymphaeum, a temple dedicated to water nymphs, located on an island in the small lake of the village. Here, in fact, nymphs were believed to dwell by springs and rivers, in trees, and cool grottoes. Some locals still say that nymphs hide among the ruins of the ancient settlement of Ninfa, when the deep silence of the site is interrupted by mysterious noises.
However, the village of Ninfa was not always a tranquil place: inhabited since the Roman era, in the Middle Ages it was a rich town on the Appian Way. In 1159, Pope Alexander III was crowned there and, about a decade later, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa sacked and burned it, after his enemy the Pope had taken refuge in the town. Over the centuries, the medieval village was abandoned and the garden neglected until the 20th century, when the estate was finally renovated. To restore the garden, species were imported from all over the world, and today the garden counts over a thousand varieties of plants and trees!
