Meaning of the illumination:
Zelus Dei, or The Zeal of God, is one of the most surprising illuminations associated with Hildegard of Bingen’s visionary work Scivias. At first glance, the image appears simple; yet, like many of Hildegard’s visions, its simplicity conceals a powerful message.
At the center of the image is a fiery red head with wings, positioned at the corner where two walls meet. The first wall symbolizes speculative knowledge, or mirror knowledge: the ability to know oneself through self-reflection and self-examination. The second wall represents our deeds, which can be rightly evaluated only through the self-knowledge symbolized by the first wall. The two walls are therefore inseparable.
Hildegard teaches that without this kind of knowledge, there can be no justice. Many evil acts, in fact, originate not from a deliberate desire to do harm, but from ignorance. Wisdom begins with self-knowledge: the ability to examine ourselves honestly and become good critics of our own actions. “The ultimate ignorance is ignorance of self,” she reminds us.
With this in mind, the elements of the illumination become clearer. The three wings symbolize wisdom, reflection, and intelligence. The fiery red head represents the fervor of divine zeal for justice. The walls represent the foundations on which wisdom and justice rest: self-knowledge and good deeds. Upon these foundations can be built a city of “living stones”: people grounded in virtue, with Christ as the cornerstone. This architectural symbolism also appears in Hildegard’s Antichrist mandala (see Related Products below).
The red head does not look peaceful, and for good reason. Hildegard describes the figure as having the “terrifying face of a human person looking back with great anger to the north.” This is the same kind of anger we feel when we encounter injustice. As Hildegard writes, “Person and society are wounded by the same weakness: injustice.” This is why God’s zeal, his ultimate purpose, is always directed toward justice.
In Hildegard’s vision, justice is woven into the very consciousness of the cosmos. For this reason, injustice may wound the world, but it cannot have the final word. Zelus Dei becomes a powerful message of hope: a reminder that divine justice, rooted in wisdom and self-knowledge, will ultimately prevail.
The Restoration process:
Our restoration process aimed to recover the original appearance of the mandala: vivid yellows and reds, sharp details even in larger formats, and a fully discernible subject. Through meticulous digital restoration, we brought these elements back to light while preserving the spirit of the original illumination. It is now possible to fully experience its remarkable colors and symbolism as they were meant to be seen when the image was originally painted.
