Create an unforgettable dining experience with these cloth napkins that are sure to become a conversation piece! We used authentic alchemical art from the Middle Ages to create this unique design that celebrates the Four Elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.
An intricate dance of chimeras, angels, and satyrs scatters the elements out into the world, because in antiquity the Four Elements were believed to be energy forces essential to life on Earth.
Maintaining a balance between the elements was also considered necessary to ensure the well-being of body and mind, in fact all medicine before modern times was based on the Doctrine of the Four Humours: blood (air), mucous (water), black bile (earth), and yellow bile (fire).
Health was believed to come from the harmonious distribution of the four humours, while illness was the result of the dominance of a fluid or an element. For this reason, therapy took place by emptying the surplus fluid (“materia pecans” = guilty matter).
The Doctrine of the Four Humours was also applied to emotions. The wrong mixing of humours was deemed to be the cause of the four temperaments: melancholia (earth; melanos = black, chole = bile), sanguine type (air; sanguis = blood), phlegmatic person (water; phlegma = steam), choleric type (fire; chole = bile). This is why still to this day, we associate anger with fire.
