Description
This stretched matte canvas will bring a piece of medieval wonder directly into your home! Considered one of the most beautiful scenes in the Lady and Unicorn series, our fully restored version features rich, jewel-toned reds and deep blues that will revive any corner. The 0.75" depth makes it perfect to place above a mantel, beside a reading chair, or on a hallway. It hangs steady thanks to soft rubber pads on the back, and the certified inks keep colors vivid while staying eco-conscious.
The Lady and the Unicorn is a series of six tapestries woven in wool and silk, from designs drawn in Paris around 1500. They depict the five senses (taste, hearing, sight, smell, and touch), and although the full meaning is obscure, it has been interpreted as representing mutual love and understanding.
In the 'Sight' tapestry, the lady is seated, holding a mirror up in her right hand. The unicorn kneels on the ground, with his front legs in the lady's lap, from which he gazes at his reflection in the mirror. This could be interpreted as a display of vanity, but it's rather an act of introspection. The two lovers don't look directly into each other's eyes, but their gaze is mediated by the mirror, and for a good reason: only by knowing oneself, the bond between lovers can grow deeper. The "sight" is therefore an invitation to "see" yourself.
The tapestries remained at risk until 1882, when the Musée de Cluny in Paris purchased them. Unfortunately, they were found in poor condition due to improper storage, suffering from dampness and mold, had lost some areas of weave and the colors faded. We have performed a meticulous digital restoration, with the reconstruction of missing patches, color correction of discolored areas, color harmonization of the subjects against the background, and overall restoring of original vibrance. In doing so, we avoided plastic results by choosing a conservative restoration, aimed to preserve texture and the signs of antiquity. We feel confident to say that no other restoration of this scope and detail has been undertaken before on this particular artwork.
