Description
Fully restored and ready to hang, this painting will bring a smile to anybody who looks at it! Cats and kittens are gathered on a circular table, studying a musical score on which an owl is perched. We can almost hear them rehearsing, and it looks like the cat to the left hit a high note that might not be well tuned. The owl is trying to decide whether to stay or fly away... The window, however, has been occupied by a curious cat that is spying inside. The composition is well balanced on the bottom left with a colorful monkey that plays a clarinet, while a fellow baboon listens with interest. By the way, is all this happening while humans are away?

When painting this artwork, David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690) creatively interpreted an art trend raging in the heart of Europe. In fact, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Low Countries became known for a rather unusual art trend. Singerie, which can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, depicts monkeys performing human behavior, gambling and smoking, sculpting and courting, and often wearing quite fashionable outfits. But monkeys were not the only animals to be humanized, in fact bird concerts were also popular.
These ‘mewling concerts’ were perfect scenes to be displayed in music rooms inside the nobles' mansions. They were fun, and also served as a cautionary warning: perform well or risk to be labeled as a "screaming cat".
We digitally restored the painting to remove cracks, missing patches, and to give vibrance to the faded colors, all while preserving the historical feel and details. We also extended the canvas to seamlessly wrap around the frame. This matte canvas comes with back hanging already included, has a museum grade thickness of 1.25 inches, and the frame is made with profile radial pine that is ethically sourced from renewable forests. The special proprietary coating guarantees a vibrant print that will not fade overtime.
