This design features the most famous heraldic sign, the Fleur-de-lis, a symbol of timeless elegance and nobility. Its name comes from the French fleur (flower) and lis (lily), in fact it is the stylized depiction of the lily flower. First of all, the lily has always been a symbol of purity, in fact its three petals are widely associated with the Holy Trinity, with the band on the bottom symbolizing Mary. A tradition going back to 14th century added onto the earlier belief that they also represented faith, wisdom and chivalry. This explains why so many noble families tried to claim its "copyright".
Most notably, the fleur-de-lis was the symbol of Île-de-France, the core of the French kingdom. This is why it is depicted on the traditional coat of arms of France that was used from the High Middle Ages until the French Revolution. Interestingly, some cities that had been particularly faithful to the French Crown were awarded a heraldic augmentation of two or three fleurs-de-lis on their coat of arms; such cities include Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux, among others.
Many other European countries adopted this symbol, for example it is featured in the Crown Jewels of England and Scotland. In Italy, the fleur-de-lis even became synonym of a city, Florence, which came up with its own design - a variation with stamens known as the Florentine lily. Not to mention that fleurs-de-lis have also been used for some papal crowns and even by some doges of Venice.
