Description
This tapestry is a true medieval work of art, in fact every single creature comes from an original Persian manuscript that we restored and assembled in an interlocking continuous pattern.
This is not the regular fish you may find underwater, but rather a "swimming zoo" where you can spot an owl with fins, an elephant that looks like a squid, or an angel fish with diving wings. These creatures are so full of personality, that while restoring the work, we assigned to each one its own name.
But as you look closely, you will notice that something else is happening in this scene: a young fish (with human head) is in love and is trying to pursue the only mermaid in the composition. Will the young fish be able to go through all the rows of partying creatures...and especially pass the porcupine fish? Perhaps, the cute rabbit fish will help with the aid of his friend turtle who is already trying to break the rows.
Interestingly, in Persian art, mermaids were not represented like in Western art, in fact the woman literally "comes out" from a whole fish rather than being half human and half fish.
This tapestry would be great in a kid's room, as well as in a living room where it creates a unique vintage, eclectic vibe. In our studio, the wall where it hangs became our favorite reading corner!
